Experience 250 years of Danish painting, sculpture, drawings and graphics in an attractive, colourful achitectonic setting! Funen Art Museum is situated in the heart of Odense in a classic museum building which dates from 1885. Exhibitions, guided tours, lectures, concerts, drawing lessons and children's activities are held all year round to promote the different aspects of art.
The collection is chronologically presented: 18th century Romantic art plus portraits and landscapes from 1800-1850. Striking examples are displayed of the realistic and symbolic influences from the period around 1900, while the vital naturalism of the years 1010-30 is especially evident in the work of the artist group known as the Fynboere (Funen artists). Danish Modernism 1910-1945 is represented by a number of exquisite works by renowned artists. Imaginative abstract art, as in works by the CoBrA artists of 1935-1960 are also represented.
Funen Art Museum is a museum that specialises in concrete art which is an artform that is dedicated to shape, line, geometry and colour and, in keeping with this, showcases important works by groups of artists such as "Linien" and "Linien 2"
from the period 1930-80. From 1970, two currents of more recent art are presented: a number of artists use techniques and scientific systems in both painting and sculpture, but based on the style of concrete art. The second path is Postmodernist works characterised by architectonic shapes and historical stylistic references.
In the "På stregen" ("Behold the line") exhibition room, changing exhibitions are displayed of approximately 3,500 drawings and graphic works.
